Willesden Triathlon – Tried and tested: Jim
Jim first took part in the Willesden Triathlon in 2015. Here, he gives us his thoughts on the race and why it’s the perfect confidence builder for first-timers.
Why did you decide to take part in the Willesden Triathlon?
It was my first ever triathlon and I wanted to do a fun and friendly race to get started. I obviously didn’t have any previous triathlon experience or specific kit. In fact, I did the race on a normal hybrid bike as I didn’t have a road bike at the time.
How did it go?
I finished in just under an hour and had a really good day all round. The race itself started in the pool and I was put alongside people of similar ability so I felt very comfortable and had a great swim. The bike section was a short loop around quiet roads with marshals on several corners. For the run, we looped around the park a few times and then into the final stretch with a finish line on the athletics track where we got our medals, a cheer and homemade cake and refreshments. I felt a real sense of achievement crossing the line.
Have you taken part in any more triathlons since?
Yes, since then I’ve done several longer distance triathlons but this was a really great way to start out and build confidence.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about signing up this year?
I’d recommend the event to first-timers and anyone looking for a personal challenge. I’m hoping to take part again myself this year as a fun way to finish the 2016 season.
